幸の名前を決めるときに、日本犬なので日本の名前にしたいと思い「歯切れのいい子音が入っていて犬自身が聞こえやすく、日本語が母国語でない人にもちゃんと呼んでもらえるような名前」を考えました。もちろん、名前の意味も大切なので「幸せになるように」と、この名前にしました。

'Sachi' means 'happiness', 'blessing', and 'good luck' in Japanese. I wanted to give her a Japanese name that is short and has some crisp sounds so she can hear her name clearly. Also, I chose a name which is easy to pronounce for non-Japanese speakers.

以上のような理由で幸の名前を選んだので、幸の登録名もなるべく「幸」に近いものにしました。'KTAADN'は幸の犬舎名です。

Some dogs have very long official names, but Sachi is Sachi officially.

記録が残っている限りでは、柴犬が初めてアメリカに上陸したのは１９５４年。日本に駐在していた軍関係のアメリカ人家族と一緒にこの国に来たということです。AKC（アメリカン・ケンネル・クラブ）に柴犬が正式登録されたのは１９９３年。アメリカでは柴犬よりも根強い人気の秋田犬の登録はそれよりも２０年も早く１９７３年でした。

According to a record, the first Shiba Inu was brought to the US by a family who worked for the US armed forces in Japan in 1954. Shiba Inu was recognized by AKC in 1993. Akita, which is more widely known Japanese breed in the US was recognized in 1973.

アメリカのメイン州で生まれました。幸のリッターは、４匹すべてメスでした。

Sachi was born in Maine (USA). There were four in the litter and they were all girls.

幸は生後三ヶ月まで、ブリーダー宅の両親犬、姉妹犬＋他の二頭の計８頭からなるパックの中で生活していたため、犬との付き合い方はかなりよく心得ているようです。いろいろな犬に会っても、相手の犬が社会化が十分できている場合、問題なく遊べます。そしてブリーダー宅には、当時小学生のお嬢さんがいたので、子供に対しても免疫ができています。姉妹犬四頭の中では、もう一頭と常にリーダー争いをしていたということですから、そういう資質を持った犬なのでしょう。家に来てからも、いろいろな人にかわいがってもらい、誰に対しても興味を持ち、「フレンドリーな犬」として知られています。小型犬よりも大型犬が好きなようで、一緒に遊びたがりますが、自分の体の何倍もある犬に対しても卑屈な態度を決してとりません。

Sachi has never had bad experience with people, and she seems to believe that people are good. That may be why she is friendly to them. She is patient even with small children who tend to do things Sachi may not like (unrolling her tail, etc.). Sachi is friendly to most of dogs, but she does not seem to like small dogs as much. When those small dogs bark at her, she gets annoyed. According to my observation, Sachi seems to like black labs the best. Although they are twice as big, she does not mind at all.

狂ったように走り回ること。雨の日に散歩から帰って来た時やシャンプーの後で体が濡れている時などに、家の中をすごいスピードで走り回ります。時々おもちゃを振り回して格闘しているような遊びもします。５〜６分するとエネルギーを使い果たしてやめるので、気がすむまでやらせておくことにしています。その間私はカウチの上に避難します。

Shiba Inu 100/mph Run: Especially when she comes back from an evening walk or after taking a bath, she runs around in the house like crazy. She sometimes has a squeaky toy in her mouth when she does this run, and acts as if she was killing it. She usually runs out of energy in 5, 6 minutes and stops. I put my feet on the couch and evacuate from the floor when she runs around like this.

やはり歯磨でしょうか。小さい頃から慣れるようにしたつもりだったのですが、言えば大人しく口を開けているようなタイプの犬ではないので、こちらも工夫が必要です。

She still does not like to have her teeth brushed. However, recently she started chewing on bones on a regular basis, and plaque I was concerned is getting cleaned. This method is easier for me of course, and she seems to enjoy it, too.

人間語をかなり理解しているようです。言葉の意味が分かるというより、「こういう音が聞こえたらこうするんだ」というように理解しているようです。食事の前にはかならず「伏せ」の状態でOKというリリースコマンドが出るまで待ちますが、この「OK」と似たような音で同じような意味の言葉を発してみたことがあります。例えば「all right」もこの状況では同じ意味になりますが、幸は動きませんでした。コマンド以外のいつも使う言葉も統一した方がいいのは、こういう理由があるわけですね。

Standard commands for obedience training in English; 'gohan' (meal) and 'osanpo' (going for a walk) in Japanese. Sachi seems to understand quite a bit of human language, especially English words. They way she behave seems to be paired with sounds. This is my mere guess, but it seems 'when this sound is heard, I should do this' type of comprehension. Once, I conducted a little experiment. She always keeps her down stay before she has her meals until I say ok which is a release command I use. I said 'all right' instead of 'ok' which means the same thing in this situation, however, Sachi did not move.

「何と言う犬種か」「成犬か」「バッセンジーか」「狐みたい」
私が住んでいる町に登録されている柴犬は幸だけです。そのせいか、幸と一緒に散歩に行くといろいろ面白いことを聞かれます。一番多いのは「わ〜、狐みたい」と言うコメント。「狐みたい」ならまだいいのですが、私が狐を連れていると信じていたある５歳ぐらいの子供には、「おもしろいペット」と言われました。

'What kind of dog is this?', 'Is she full-grown?', 'She looks like a fox!', 'Is this Basenji?'
According to what the city official told me, there is only one Shiba Inu (Sachi) registered in the town I live. That may be why people ask me odd questions when I take out Sachi for a walk. The most common comment is 'she looks like a fox'. However, one 5-year-old kid we met believed I had a pet fox, and his comment was 'interesting pet!'.
